I'm a bit puzzled in help on VLC Player i clicked (about) and a small window shows at its top it says VLC media player 0.9.9 Girshenko then down a bit it says gcc version 4.2.1sjIj so what version do i have please ?, have included a pic >

Your VLC version is 0.9.9.

GCC is the compiler used for building VLC.
