VLC crashes Windows Explorer

Postby Flexman » 26 May 2009 12:43

When I open a video by double clicking it from the Windows Explorer it sometimes happens that the Windows Explorer will crash after VLC opens that video. This is a problem that didn't occur with earlier versions but now happens with 0.9.9 as well as with the current 1.0rc. It's not only on my computer, also a friend noticed this problem.

According to the error message the Data Execution Prevention, DEP closes the Windows Explorer for security reasons. Whatever this means. However, this problem didn't appear with older versions of the VLC nor with any other program I use in Windows.

Here are screenshots of the error-message:

VLC cannot kill the Windows Explorer. Buggy DirectShow codecs or decoders can.

Hm. This problem also occures when I try to select more videos with the STRG+Mouseclick. But why does it only occure since I installed the new VLC version? The computer is quite fresh so I'm not aware of having installed any DirectShow filters.

I have activated DEP and just tested with a 1.0.0-git VLC, DEP didn't warn me about anything, weird.

If you want to suppress this anoying DEP on VLC, maybe you can:
Goto control panel > System
Tab "Advanced", first button (performances), and last tab in opened window.

I uninstalled VLC now and still had the problem (although it was slightly better in the beginning). So it doesn't seem the be the fault of VLC alltough it started with the latest version. :(

All DEP warnings I encountered were triggered when Windows Explorer tried to fetch informations from media files (especially .mov from a camera). The solution was for me to deactivate media metadata support from Windows Explorer.

Try this:
Start> Execute, "regsvr32 -u shmedia.dll" (without quotes) then validate. Maybe you will have to restart for this command to take effect.

Be aware that windows explorer will no longer be able to fill metadata columns like length, size, or preview of media files (audio & video).
