Please, don't use CAPS LOCK. It isn't cruise control for cool people.

Can you play other audio files correctly?

I'm having a similar problem. I am trying to play the Tomb Raider Underworld teaser trailer (.mov format - can get it here). The video is excellent, stunning. Much, much better than if I play it using QuickTime. However, I get absolutely no audio. Audio works in Quicktime. I get audio through VLC playing other video files, even other .mov files. So it must be something to do with this particular file. It is in HD, perhaps they are using some fancy new audio codec.

sorry about caps lock; i didn't even realize i had it on.

i tried to play an mp3 file thru vlc and i got no sound on that either. hopefully that will help diagnose the problem. i have windows vista in case that matters for some reason. i appreciate any feedback i can get.
thanks in advance

LukeZ: I will check your issue shortly, I just need to download the file first.

luvinmcgrawinflorida: try Waveout audio output.

I've been able to tweak the video settings in QuickTime so my movie appears better, and it won't be the end of the world if I can't play it in VLC. Still, would be nice to know what I'm doing wrong...

Thanks for checking.

Luke

LukeZ: You aren't doing anything wrong. It is a bug in VLC. Thanks for reporting it. Trac opened.

Wow! It really is true - the best support only comes with software that's free.

wiki says says to go to audio then output module. the only problem is.....'output module' is NOT one of the choices. that page says General Audio Settings and the options include: enable audio, default audio volume, output audio volume step, output audio frequency, high quality audio resampling, use S/PDIF when available, force detection of dolby surround, audio desynchronization compensation, replay gain mode, replay preamp, default replay gain, peak protection

there is nothing on the page that says 'output module' :(

some of those options listed above have a box which can be checked and the others have a number box which you can scroll or type in your own number

i am so frustrated :?

Audio -> Output modules selection is on the left side.

okay, i previously clicked on that but only clicked once instead of twice (duh). i opened it and changed the output as you suggested but it didn't work.....still no sound. i tried every other output as well and the only once that gave me any sound at all was portaudio audio output. the only sounds i heard sounded like scratchy, intermittent, staticy noises for a couple of seconds; nothing even close to audio. i hope you have some other suggestions.
thanks in advance

i looked in control panel under device manager/sound, video, game controllers. i think this is the info you are looking for: Realtek High Definition Audio/ Realtek HDMI Output

if not, please let me know where to find the name of the audio device

thanks

Realtek HDMI Output would suggest that you have ATI Radeon 3000 or 4000 series display adapter.

You prolly have other sound device also because usually motherboards have one build-in. You should see multiple devices in Audio -> Output modules -> WaveOut if that is the case (assuming that all devices have their drivers installed).

Usually VLC sound issues can be cured by updating your sound device drivers. But there are also some audio devices that don't work in VLC (like some Digidesign devices and that is why I asked the name of the device).

there were other devices listed in the output modules.....i tried them all and none of them worked. how do you 'update sound device drivers?' i guess that's my next move. i appreciate all the feedback but it appears that this problem is not getting solved. can anyone recommend another 'media player' (other than the typical programs on everyone's computer) that i can download to see and hear my videos taken with an HD camera? please.

You can try Media Player Classic Home Cinema.
