If you know what the url/link of the stream is, you can try to add it via the first menu: Media > Open network - and paste the link in the address line.
Not all streams will play.
If it can play via VLC there is a good chance that you can record too: Menu > Media - Convert/Stream > Network etc. etc.
This goes for 0.9.8a and I guess for 0.9.9.
