VLC and Firefox

I have just started to use VLC. Watching videos which are stored on my computer in various file-formats is working fine so far (Window XP, SP3, all current updates).

I am using Firefox (3.0.8) as my web browser. I am not sure if I installed VLC correctly even though I think I read everything on the VLC pages and checked everything that seems of importance. I am a media player newbie.

Since I am German I also look at the pages of heute.de. They also offer videos to watch and I wanted to watch them. At least something of the installation must have worked. They offer the possibility changing the settings to watching the videos with Windows Media Player, VLC and Quicktime. The setting page already automatically seems to recognize that VLC is installed. Nevertheless, I cannot see the videos though before I could with Windows Media Player.

I do not know on which other internet pages I could check if VLC is working fine. I checked BBC.co.uk, but they as other pages too use flash players (e.g. Adobe's).

How can I check if I installed VLC correctly or if this is only a problem of heute.de?

Thank you for your help.

Hello VLC_Help,

Thank you for your reply and help.

I tried out the link you provided, but nothing happened. I also pushed the play-button on the controls/widget bar on the lower left - nothing. Pressed the "launch VLC with all these options" button on the lower right but again nothing.

Some more general information for everybody.
Firewall: ZoneAlarm 8.0.298
Antivirus: Avira AntiVir Personal Edition 9.0.0

Firefox:
I do not know if VLC needs Java to work properly (I suppose it does not), but I checked it on the Java page just to make sure - everything fine here.
Add-ons in firefox (all activated):
- Extensions: Java Quick Starter, mediaplayerconnectivity, Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant
- Plugins: Adobe Acrobat, Java (TM) Platform SE 6 U13 [Java (TM) Platform SE binary], Java (TM) Platform SE 6 U13 [Java Plug-in 1.6.0_13 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)], Microsoft DRM [DRM Netscape Network Object], Microsoft DRM [DRM Store Netscape Plugin], Mozilla Default Plug-In, Shockwave Flash, VLC Multimedia Plug-In, Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library, Windows Presentation Foundation.

Thank you everybody for your help

Java isn't needed. Javascript is needed for that page I linked.

Hello VLC_help,

Thanks again for your input.

Javascript is enabled (Firefox options).

Any other ideas?

You see missing plugin icon or black in that page in that box where the media should be?

Hello VLC_help,

Thank you for your patience. I am back only now since I was working on the computer and needed to roll back the system. Therefore, I also had to reinstall VLC.

Before reinstallation, I did not see (as far as I can remember) a missing plugin icon, and there was also not a box above the what I would describe as a play controls bar.

With the new installation everything now seems to be fine. I can see a black box now, above the play controls bar. In the black box is a the text "Waiting for video" displayed but I could sit and wait forever with no video showing. If I click on the play button, a message box appears with "nothing in the playlist!". If I press the button on the lower right "launch VLC with all these options" then a video starts to play though.

To me it seems that everything is working fine. Also, I can see the videos on heute.de now. Thank you for your help and patience. If everything is fine for you on what I described in the paragraph above, about the link you gave me, we can close the topic,
