DVD Won't Play

I have a DVD that will play on most DVD players (but not a few odd ones). It will play on my Windows XP/Vista computers with WinDVD, Vista's Media Center or other like tools. However VLC will not play it.
If I just to a normal Disk DVD Play then I just get a gray Window and at the bottom it says "dvd://F:\" at the bottom then that fades away and the DVD never plays.
If I select the No DVD menus option then hit play then i get the error
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple://F:\'. Check the log for details.
Unfortunaly I can't find the log file.
Any thoughts?
thanks for the help and ideas
Alan

dvdsimple is still broken. Have you tried to open dvd://F:\VIDEO_TS ?

VLC_help,
thanks for the response
i tried "dvd://F:\VIDEO_TS" and and that did not work.
Next i tried Media -> Open Folder and went to F:\Video_TS (should be much the same as above) and that did not work
So then I tried Media -> Open File and went to F:\Video_TS\ and found 3 files
I tried to play each file.
Video_TS.VOB @ 114KB --> would not play screen has a video box then it goes away.
VTS_01_0.VOB @ 10KB --> would not play screen has a video box then it goes away.
VTS_01_1.VOB @ 1,027,578kb. --> It plays just like WindDVD and most (not all) normal DVD players.
thanks for the help. So now why is VLC not playing the right file? Are the other files pointers or links to the correct file? Is this an issue that could be corrected in the next release?
This was part of several DVDs that were created for us. What did the people that created the DVDs for us do "wrong" or different from most normal DVDs that are created?
For a few of our users of VLC this could confuse them.
Is this an issue that would/could be corrected in the future?
The large file is to large to send, but i would be happy to send the other two smaller ones for development.
thanks for the help and all the hard work on VLC.
thanks
Alan

The DVD might be authored against the DVD Video specifications. Or it just might wake up some bug in VLC. If you know how to use binary file splitters, you could cut something like 20 first megs from VTS_01_1.VOB and add those two other files to same package and then share to us.

I have the exact same problem.
I just bought Lost season 4 on DVD a few days ago, and the DVDs won't play on this laptop, at least not in VLC. They play fine with other players, but VLC only gives me the aforementioned gray window.
The DVDs for seasons 1, 2 and 3 from the same manufacturer play just fine.
When I first encountered the problem, I was still using VLC version 0.8.3, so I upgraded to 0.9.9. This didn't solve the problem, however.

Where should I send the file? email? FTP site etc?
I can email a fairly large email but not sure what your limitations might be....
thanks

No emails =)
Use either rapidshare, megaupload or videolan upload ftp upload (add .txt file that explains the problem)
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/incoming

I just uploaded my files to
ftp://ftp.videolan.org/incoming as requested.
I put in there the first 10 megs from VTS_01_1.VOB and all other files in the Video folder along with as screen shot of the folder and a Text file about the problem referencing this thread.
I will be curious about the problem/resolution.
thanks for your help and hard work.

VLC_help,
Were you able to confirm the upload of the files related to this problem worked? I know you may not have had time to look at the issue but wanted t make sure the right people got the files. .... and naturally what the outcome of the issue was now that someone else is reporting a similar issue.

I don't have access to that FTP. So I don't know if the files got there.

I'm having a similar problem playing Hellboy II The Golden Army on VLC. I get the language menu then the first copyright warning plays and gets stuck about half way through and freezes. This is on OS X.

FYI, I just tested with vlc-1.0.0-pre2-20090418-2204-win32 nightly trunk build and it still did not work.
i have not heard from anyone, but though I should check just in case it was a bug fixed already.

VLC_Help,
Are you able to make sure the right people see this?

The incoming folder should be checked about every day. But most DVD issues under Win32 come from libdvdnav or some other external library which isn't maintained by VLC devs. So it might be that it won't get fixed anytime soon.

Hi,
I have exact same issue. I seem to get this problem when I have DVD's made by an external marketing company. Works fine with other players and software like WinDVD etc.
For the records here is my log. I would really appreciate a technical reason as to why this is happening (so I can update my boss). I have a work around so I can wait for a fix. Thanks heaps to all involved.

I tested this bug on VLC RC1 and it still had the same issue. I then tested it on VLC RC2 and gave some new error stuff.
If when i first put the DVD in now VLC wanted to play it and so i let it .... but it popped up with an error message
=================
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "F:"".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://F:"'. Check the log for details.
=================
I checked the log file and found the following

main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
-- logger module started --

main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

I don't know if it will help but for the "fun" of it I then went to View -> Add interface -> Debug Logging
then tried to play the dvd from Media -> Open Disk

As previously requested i uploaded parts of the files along with other information to the VLC ftp site.
The video does play if i go to Media - Open File then on the disk get the right file.
With this new and changed information is there any chance this can get fixed for final 1.0?
thanks
Alan

FYI
I just tested this on VLC 1.0.0-rc3 and the problem still exists. Based on what I have seen and heard this is not unique to just my DVD although some of the reports sound similar but are not the same issue.
If needed I can resend the DVD files to the FTP site as it would be nice to get this issue fixed for 1.0 final
thanks for everyone's thoughts and ideas.

Does the VIDEO_TS folder work OK, if you rip it to hard drive and try the playback from there?

I can't say for 100 percent sure i ripped it correctly (it is not protected) but open folder after having it on my HD also failed.
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://'. Check the log for details.
like i said i can play it if i manually select the right file... but otherwise a no go.
thanks

DVDRead could not open the disc "".
You didn't specify the location correctly. It should say the location that it tried to open, now it just states empty location.

I have the same Problem.
If i start VIDEO_TS.VOB then i get the Error:
VLC media Player has a error and must be finished
If i start VTS_01_1.VOB then VLC plays the hole Film.
it makes no differences starting from Hard disk, or DVD-Player.
I use only my own burned DVD's.
Win XP, SP2, Player:Lite On iHAS 322 8 and GSA-H12N
