Help, VLC deletes tons of files on my hard drive!

This has happened twice now so i can confirm that it's related to VLC. I installed vista 2 days ago on a completely fresh reformat, so everything is brand new. I also have the latest version of spyware doctor installed so i don't think i have any viruses. But when i download the latest self extracting executable of VLC and try to install it, it deletes all my quick launch icons, all my files in the "programs" folder in the start menu, and randomly deletes all kinds of program files and registry entries which makes all my programs (except windows itself) stop working. I had to do a system restore twice now after trying to install VLC. I can also confirm that other self extracing executables work fine, so the problem seems limited to VLC. What the hell's going on?

What? Where did you download VLC?

From this site. I tried downloading the zip file without the installer, and that works fine (except i have to right click on video files and choose "open with"). I just made a system restore point, and a i've made a complete scan in safe mode with malwarebytes anti malware software, and it didn't find anything. I'll try the installer one more time and see what happens.

You have list of those files and registry entries that vanished?
