Hi I'm new here, this is my first post as a matter of fact so I hope Its OK if I popped out a question immediately ... I was skeptic at first about VLC but I installed it once for a friend of mine on one of those net books because I know its light weight and then I installed it for myself and since made it my default video player ... It looks ugly because of its simplicity but now I think this is what makes it so beautiful , It just works ... I have known that VLC is the player that plays anything so I went ahead and removed Power DVD from my computer ... I don't know if this was a smart move or not but I've tried to open a DVD today but it simp)le just won't open , the Open with VLC option shows in the autorun menu and when I choose it VLC opens but it just doesn't show anything, not even a black screen .. Nothing

I'm just wondering is it a matter of codecs or something or is removing power DVD the reason for this ??? Appreciate any help and once again this peice of software kicks ass

Autorun menu ?
Just use the VLC menu: Media -> Open disc
Make sure DVD is ticked and in the Disc Device box type in the correct letter of your DVD drive, if it's not already the correct one. Then click on the Play button at the bottom.

I'm just wondering is it a matter of codecs or something or is removing power DVD the reason for this ???
Nope, VLC is using its own built-in codecs so PowerDVD has no effect on VLC.

The auto run menu you get when you insert a DVD into your computer or something, it has nohing to do with VLC

Anyway I tried the Open Media and this has worked for me before but this is what I get now : VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://E:\'. Check the log for details.

I downloaded something called Essentials Codec Pack with Media player classic and it opened the DVD fine so I know the DVD is fine but I'm not really sure why VLC won't play it ...

Its not a big deal because I got the DVD playing on Media player classic but I just want to get VLC running because I want it to be my default player and I need it to play DVDs

Can you browse the disc content via Windows Explorer? What does Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) say if you open it before trying the DVD playback?
