Unable to automatically load playlist

Using VLC but every time I run it I have to manually load my playlist (VLC.spf). I have tried inserting a path to this file in the Playlist in Setttings but all that does is to have the file name itself to show up in the playlist rather than the individual entries. Any one know how to load the individual entries in to the playlist and not play them on startup of VLC?
