Please help
I've only had VLC for a few days and it's been brilliant. I'm in the middle of watching a series, which has been playing fine, but I've discovered that a hadnful of the episodes won't play.
It comes up with the message: 'VLC can't recognize the input's format' - it is an avi file, the same as all of the earlier episodes that have played fine but this one says 'the format...cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details.'

I am new to this so if 'look at the log' is really simple I apologise for being dumb, but I don't know where I'm looking or what to do to fix it.
I am gutted, it was going to be a turning point in the series and it's killing me that it won't play.

Also, there is nothing wrong with the file because it plays fine on my boyfriend's computer and he's the one who told me to get VLC. Please help as my tv addiction is suffering.

He downloaded it for me from bittorent.

Does tool called Mediainfo identify it correctly?

hi yes it does, it recognises the title (including .avi) and also the location

What codecs and container format does Mediainfo say the file uses?

I am having this same problem trying to open Avi files... any ideas?

AVI is only a container format, important for vlc to open a file are the video-/audio content. Have a look at the log file with log level 2

HELP: VLC can't recognize the input's format: TXT

I get the same error if I have a Text file with the same filename.txt as the video. VLC tries to load the TXT file with the mp3 or avi and gives me the popup which I then have to clear and close.

How do I stop this annoyance? Many of my media files include a similarly named description file text which does not need vlc hijacking and chocking on.

What is the best way to turn this "feature" off.

Thank You. I did not notice that as I have not ventured into the ADVANCE MENU until I realized that I could not find what you suggested in the basic one.

I am getting the below error:

VLC can't recognize the input's format:
The format of 'C:\Users\Downloads\The Sound of Music[1965]DvDrip[720x436]AC3[6ch][Eng]-RHooD\The Sound of Music[1965]DvDrip[720x436]AC3[6ch][Eng]-RHooD.txt' cannot be detected. Have a look the log for details.


In this half the fiile has audio and half the file is mute.. i'v downloaded this file from torrent.

Don't download sh!tty files.

Disabling subtitle autoloading might help.

I do want subtitles to autoload. Meaningless error messages over TXT files I'd rather not have. I haven't seen this "TXT file error" feature in any other players.
They also steal focus during playback, as if the message was something important.

VLC thinks .txt files are subtitles, since some people have used .txt file extension for subtitles. Then VLC tries to autoload that file as subtitle and since it isn't a subtitle file, VLC will complain.

Whenever i try to open or play any video/audio format it may be mp3,mp4,avi,mkv,flv i am getting an error VLC can't recognize the input's format: please see log for details. i have tried re-install many times with latest and many different version but getting same error...That video/audio i am able to play in other media players.please suggest a solution.....
