Use the equalizer.

yeah its AC-3, how else would it be 5.1? dont worry its not a dynamic range compression thing, its more because of the downmix because other players play it louder while VLC only boosts the vocal stuff leaving the effects music as quiet.

Well it could be 5.1 AAC, OGG, DTS, LPCM, etc.

At least on my case Structure of Ambient Life - Dolby Digital AC-3 File from http://www.diatonis.com/downloads_dts_ac3.html downmixes OK.

well i cant download from the link you gave me as it requires authentication password thing, but i was comparing VLC with other players and there is a difference most notably the downmixing. and VLC's equalizer needs a little bit of work because i would like it to be more easy to use, an exxample would be WMP which has a feature where you can drag all the freq. all at once.

did alittle bit of research and found this:

The default downmix levels for Dolby Digital 5.1 are:
Center: -3dB to Left, -3 dB to Right
Left Surround: - 3 dB to Left
Right Surround: - 3 dB to Right
LFE: Ignore, Not Downmixed

so im guessing there should be an option in VLC that changes those or something,
