How to tune to ATSC channels in VLC?

Windows XP SP3, latest audio, video, tuner drivers.
Tuner: Pinnacle HDTV Pro stick, 801e
VLC 0.9.8a
OTA antenna

I have used VLC to stream media files and analog channels for a while without any problems. Great product and easy to use for a dolt like me. So I went out and bought an HD tuner thinking I can stream HD channels to my lan.

But. HOW DO I CHOOSE ATSC CHANNELS IN VLC!? I've spent 3 days reading and trying and pulling my hair out. I can see the channels in the Pinnacle app just fine (both analog and digital), but I can only select analog channels in VLC (in other words channels that are whole integers 2,4,7,28, etc). I cannot for the life of me figure out how to select the digital channels in VLC (5.1, 4.2, 50.1, etc). I tried entering 501, 50.1, 50-1, 5010000, etc, but all I get is snow or the highest analog channel listed (54).

Anyone with any input, pleeeeeeeease help or put me out of my misery and tell me it can't be done. thanks to anyone that answers this for me

If your device has BDA drivers, did you try Capture mode: DVB DirectShow?

Thanks I just tried DVB-DS, all three options and I get unable to open error or someting along those lines (not at the computer right now). The adapter is listed as "Pinnacle BDA Device 1 Path 2" so i assume it has BDA drivers.

Any other suggestions?

The ATSC module is disabled in 0.9.8a but is working in 1.0.0 nightlies - although more testing is still needed.
