I just got a new laptop w/Vista SP1 and loaded 0.9.6 to play DVDs and vobs clips from DVDs. (from commercial DVDs, full D1 MPEG2, AC3)
Intel T3200 dual core, 2GB, no other apps running when using VLC, so plenty of cpu amd memory available.
I noticed some jagged edge motion artifacts when playing some files. For example, if there is a person on the screen that is moving, there are horizontal lines at the transition to the backround. I tried changing some of video settings from "deinterlace" to "blend", "mean", etc. Some of the settings improved the artifacts, byt they were still there to varying degrees. I am playing these on the laptop screen. Same artifacts whether the video is in a small window or full screen. A few files also stutter while playing.
I renamed the vobs to mpg and opened in WMP11. (WMP11 can't open a DVD folder) I didn't see the same artifacts - the transitions were very smooth compared to VLC. In general the video performance was much better in WMP11. ( I also opened the mpg with VLC, no difference from playing the DVD folder)
I also played the same files in an XP SP2 system using WinDVD and Sonic Cineplayer, it looked about the same as in WMP11 - no artifacts.
Is this a VLC install or codec issue? Any way to improve this?
