And you use 0.9.6? And you have tried No menus option?

I’m having the very same problem but mine didn’t fix after a restart. I used to use a much older version and that work perfectly but recently I had to format my computer so i downloaded the most recent version.
The distortion only happens on DVD's, I just start the DVD using VLC, which then takes about 1 minuet to load, i then get a corrupt image like u see in the screen shot above on the title screen of the DVD. If i click play, VLC will just crash, its happened on 2 DVD's and on a third it didn’t even show an image it played the title music but no image and then just crashed.
The only thing I can think of is that I didn’t install some codec’s of some sort. Iv uninstalled re installed VLC many times now iv updated my graphics drivers hoping that might be the issue (gforce 8800 GTS), I tried installing K-lite mega codec pack and still nothing. I’m just really not sure what to do as other media formats work fine. The only other thing is that my PC I noticed is set to region one and I was trying to play region 2 DVD's but I was slightly reluctant to change that under the assumption that VLC was a multi regional player.
I have fiddled around with the basic option from the dropdown visual menu but nothing seemed to make a difference
Any help on the subject would be much appreciated

VLC cannot use DirectShow or VfW codecs. So installing codec packs don't matter. If you use VLC snapshot feature, can you see the issue in those snapshots?

I have just tested the snapshot function and yes the problem still persists in the snapshot, much like the image that is in the thread.

Then the decoding doesn't work correctly. Does the no menus option help at all?

I'd just like to pop in and say, I'm having the same issue. Using no menus doesn't seem to help. The playback only went bad after installing a new version after a reformat.

And it only bothers DVD playback? So if you copy the content to hard drive and play it from there it works OK?

hard drive content plays fine, its only when video is being played from the disk drive that any issues occur

I was having the same problems with SOME region 2 dvd's (I have a region 1 player). Try replacing "D:\" when you go to play the disc with "D:\VIDEO_TS". I'm not sure why, but it works now...at least for region 1 and 2's.
Hope it helps!

Hi, I was having the same problem and found this thread. I tried the VIDEO_TS solution described above, and it works!
Just thought I'd let you know, and thanks for the solution

I also had to reinstall my computer and downloaded the new versions. I was having all the same problems and tried many different menu options. The TS_VIDEO solution only worked sometimes (and not on the dvd i wanted to watch at the moment). The only way I could make it work is to install an old version (
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... .6i/win32/). Now, it works perfectly again.

Had same problems with 'The Green Mile' region 1 dvd, inserting VIDEO_TS like mentioned above fixed it. Player version 9.8a. What's the difference between selecting E:\VIDEO_TS manually and just leaving it at the DVD drive letter? Can't see any link between autodetecting the right directory and having problems with encoding the data stream....

Does the movie have some other stuff inside the root folder of that DVD? Like some autorun.exe files?

I get the same thing too. I have vista x64 and the only way I have found of solving it is to go back to 0.8.6i
