Windows Media A/V - No Audio

Can you tell me if this is new to 0.9.6 -
After Installing the player for files Video, The windows media 'Movie' files have no audio. Been a user since 0.8.3, but the newest version will not port the WMV audio content to the sound card. Other players will play these files fine.
Also the capture frame feature, writes to the user data areas, instead of the preset snapshot folder that was set through
preferences. Very disturbing. I used to use the two features all the time.

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

You saved the preferences and restarted the VLC after setting the directory?

Could you provide a sample file that shows the audio issue?

Version is windows vista home premium. Have all applicable updates to OpSys. Use Comodo Internet Security. An example file that won't play is Declan Galbraith = David's Song HQ. wmv. The location to download from is http://www.treblemusic.net/mediacenter [You may need to create an account - free of coarse]
I would upload this from here, but I can't find where it's allowed.

Hello,

I have been having the same trouble. Windows XP SP3; VLC v0.9.6 (updated build); WMP v11 (latest).

Whenever I stream anything (wmv/asp format) to a file (.wmv), the file is created and plays fine with sound when played in VLC. But when played in Windows Media Player, the video plays but there is no sound. I started using VLC from v0.9.4 and it has down this since I started using it. I hoped the next release of VLC would correct this but v.0.9.6, same thing.

I have looked up and down the VLC settings/preferences and can't figure out if what setting, if any, I would need to set to get Windows Media Player to play the file with sound.

Help! :(

Hello Maccabee again...

When I choose wmv/asp format from the Streaming dialog window dropdown list, which codec does VLC use to generate the .WMV file, i.e. Windows Media Player 7 (WMV1/7); 8 (WMV2/9); 9 (WMV3/9); or someother? If I knew that maybe I could help solve the riddle.

Thx,

VLC supports WMV1 and WMV2 encoding but for stream capturing, you shouldn't do any encoding.

Does tool like MediaInfo identify the VLC created files correctly?

Thanks for the quick reply. :)

Just dawned on me, aren't WMV1, WMV2, and WMA2 native to WMP v11 anyway (no added codec needed)? One'd think it'd be a "no-brainer" for WMP v11 to play the file correctly, yet anything streamed or converted with VLC to a .WMV file, my WMP v11 plays it with no sound.
