How do I make VLC the default player on my PC?.

I have been using VLC successfully for some months now since version 0.9.2 to the now installed version 0.9.6 and ever since it has been installed it has been the default player and all my Audio and video files had the traffic cone symbol attached. I installed the latest version of Windows Live Messenger this morning and now although my audio files retain the orange traffic cone symbol my video files have reverted to the WMV symbol and when I right clicked on them only the option to play with WMP. I uninstalled and reinstalled VLC thinking that would cure it but although I now have the option to play using VLC when I right click on a file it still retains the WMV symbol.

My question is how do I make VLC the default player on my PC again. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

take a media file like an avi file, press shift, then right click on it, pick open with, if the program is not in the list, ie video lan, pick browse, browse to video land and open tick the box alwasys.
