DirectX Wallpaper mode for Vista Home Premium 32 bit

I'm using VLC 0.9.4 and I'm trying to use the DirectX Wallpaper mode in VLC. I'm currently using Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit with SP1 and the 177.24 Nvidia GeForce Forceware driver for Windows Vista.
The DirectX Wallpaper mode is greyed out (note that it is enabled in the advanced system preferences) and will not let me select it.
I really want this specific feature to work on my computer. Is there any way to get this working?
I really appreciate any help/suggestions.

Vista with Aero is incompatible with Wallpaper.

But Wallpaper should work, it just disables Aero
You have to change the video output module to DirectX (not DirectX 3D like in image below).

Thanks, that worked.
I only wish it would display faster (it slows down incredibly when I switch to just DirectX). Oh well.

Whole screen goes black? Or only your desktop wallpaper?

I've got the wallpaper mode to work, but when the video loops for a second time, my background just goes black. Any ideas?

You keep the VLC on front whole time, or you minimize it to background?

Minimize it to the background.

Does it help if you keep it on foreground?

Yes it does. It works fine except for a split second of blackness when the loop starts over. But if I minimize it to the tool bar at the bottom of the desktop, it only loops once and then goes to an all black desktop.

Kick this thread up during next weekend. I try to check if I can fix this (I assume 0.8.6 doesn't have this issue because of different vout recycle policy).

I think the problems might be in
Code: Select all
rect_src.right = rect_src.left + p_vout->fmt_out.i_visible_width;
rect_src.bottom = rect_src.top + p_vout->fmt_out.i_visible_height;
those lines.
Because according to
http://www.videolan.org/developers/vlc/ ... at__t.html
i_visible_width = width of visible area
i_visible_height = height of visible area
so output wouldn't be visible when it is minimized.

So how do we fix it?

VLC 1.0.0 should have better VOUT recycle, so hopefully the video doesn't vanish anymore when next playlist item comes up.

This problem still exists. Just a heads up. I would like it if I could have a constantly looping video background thanks to VLC. Also is there a way to hide the minimized window and only have the tray icon? Thanks

QT4 options has it. Tools -> Preferences... (Show settings: All) Interface -> Main interfaces -> Qt and tick the Systray options.

Doesn't work for me. I'll try the other options.
EDIT: Those don't seem to work either. Also that QT thing seems to do odd stuff for me. I want to see the video with the QT systray thing, but it justs hides the video and doesn't let me interact with the tray icon.

Is there an easy way to remove wallpaper? I have an old house with rooms full of outdated wallpaper. I don't really know anything about it, but I'm trying to do all the work myself. I just wondered if there was an easier way to remove the wallpaper rather than just peeling it off in shreds.

Unrelated, but yeah there is. You can buy this special tool that you roll over the wallpaper and it punches little holes in it, and then you get this wallpaper removal liquid stuff and paint that onto the wallpaper, let it sit and get under the wallpaper and then you remove it. Good luck, now back on topic.

I have 3 Vista computers and 2 XP computers. I can get directX wallpaper to work on one Vista computer and one XP computer. The rest of them just turn the desktop black. All computers are running latest directX version and video drivers are all up to date. Wallpaper works on one of my XP computers only if I use VLC 1.0.1, and version 1.0.3 works on one Vista machine. I have made sure that the settings are all the same but I am still confused as to why some are working and some are not.
