Why is the file association of any version of VLC media player 0.9.* working. I tried all the versions so far and it is still not working.

You mean associations set by installer or associations set by VLCs Association setup dialog?

Not sure what you are trying to say. I've tried with both vlc-0.9.4-win32.7z and vlc-0.9.4-win32.zip.
Well I've gone into VLC's 9.* preferences and I've set most video and audio formats to VLC. When I double click my video or audio files it doesn't open up in VLC 9.*. So I've tried the right click then open with VLC method and that is not working. After I click on VLC it doesn't show up on the open with menu. I've also tried the right click then properties method and that is not working either. Whenever I try to change a particular file type default program I also have the problem of VLC 9.* not showing up on the open with box. VLC 8.6i has absolutely no problems. I don't understand why VLC 9.* is being a piece of junk and not working.
I have tried to fix this with every method I can think of.

So you aren't using installer, so it cannot be installer issue. Are you running Vista?

You don't need to use the installer when using the zip and 7zip version. It works without installing VLC. I use XP Pro SP3.

The installer script writes appropriate entries in the Registry for file associations and context menus. The non-installer file archives don't, hence why the file associations don't work.
Try installing VLC using the installer version into the directory you wish to install it to (or, once installed, you should just be able to delete the installed version folder if you like and continue using the extracted version). Restart your PC if they still don't work/icons aren't right and associations should work correctly.
Cheers, Arite.

Why did the file associations work fine with VLC 8.6i without having to do that?

Well OK, perhaps VLC 0.9.x can write to the registry without the installer. Still, try out the installer method.
Arite.

one from Association setup might be wrong, if you can confirm this, I can check it out.
