WinXP SP3
Core 2 Duo
GF 9600 GT

It freezes, there´s nothing more to say^^

I´m loading the VOB-File (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB) sit down and and some times later the picture just get stuck while the sound is still running. Then i have to reload the file because nothing else helps. I´ll post the log next time it happens.

Can you share a small sample file from that problematic MPEG file?

This has also happened to me,

I also had the issue of the control panel popping up every so many seconds, as if I'm nudging the mouse, I even took the mouse into the other room to make sure it wasnt me,,,disabled the pop up control panel,

Then i find out that I cant watch a video file for more than 5 minutes without the video freezing..the sounds carries on, and I have to remove full screen, click stop, play and space to the bit I was up to...only for it happen again soon after, with no regularity...sometimes it plays for up to 5 minutes, then other times it freezes in seconds.. :(

As a quick fix I tried using Media player, but for some reason that is now refusing to show video!! Can hear the audio though..

Everything worked fine before I "upgraded" my version of VLC to the latest...

Since the only TV I watch is on my media center, my only alternative is to downgrade....for now....

Anyone wanting a link goto..

Just thought Id let you know, downgraded to the latest release of version 8, and every works again!

Shame, I liked the full screen control panel, and visualisations...

i have the exact same problem!

always used vlc without a problem but just set up a new windows xp sp3 all clean and newest release version of vlcand it will just stop playing the video on certain .avi files after a minute or so.

scene releases all seem to work, but (some) non-scene avi make problems.

edit: i just tried 0.9.6 nightly build from today and the problem exists here too! video freezes at about the same time.

edit2: i can confirm problem is gone when downgrading to this: http://downloads.videolan.org/pub/video ... -win32.exe

btw there also is a problem with vlc and the .mpg videos of realitykings/cumfiesta affecting ALL VERSIONS OF VLC i think, all newer mpeg files since like 2 months will also stop playing after about 20-30 seconds in the vid.

This seems to be happening only on the windows version.

I happen to use both windows and linux vlc players at different times. By the looks of it, this problem is fairly wide spread and has recently started registering on microsofts radar. When windows (xp) catches the bug and gets you to submit it to microsoft, you get a message that the problem is being investigated.

The freeze up can be triggered by simply trying to interact with the video screen (eg right click to get at menu, moving the slider or simply moving the mouse). The freeze ups are not really 100% re-"produceable", but it does happen often enough to be able to pinpoint a set of culprit actions.

For my case, the freezing crashes the whole system and I have to reset the power therefore the best option is to downgrade to the 0.8.6 series.

Exactly the same problem here. This only started happening when i upgraded to 0.9.6. I didn't like the new version anyway so went back to 0.8.x but I have the same problem. VLC is now useless as I cant want any movie at all because of the video freezing. The only way I can get it back is to start the movie again but then I cant forward on to where I was because the picture freezes again. The only thing I can do is reboot but it just happens again.

Shame, I like VLC but nobody at VLC seems to be bothered about it, wish I never upgraded. Does anyone know of any similar alternatives?

It is hard to fix issue like that, if it cannot be replicated easily. And if you need to reboot computer, there are hardware issues or faulty drivers in your system. VLC cannot crash OS.

VLC doesn't crash my PC, the PC works perfectly well. The problem is that I have to reboot if I want to watch any more of the movie or FF/RW to other sections. Also when the video freezes the CPU usage also gets maxed out.

Until this bug gets sorted out I will just have to use BS Player

I see the same thing here. Vista 64, 4gb of memory and an ATI 4870x2.. Video freezes, audio continues, then after about 5-7 seconds video starts again heavily pixelated for a 2-3 secs before being fine..

I play mostly avi files, but it happens with anything I can remember..

What I have noticed though, is that it seems to be around the same time in the files that it happens.. 1/3rd into a normal tv show file (350mb) and again about 3/4ths in.. That suggests some kind of memory issue or buffer issue..

I have tried setting the video output to directx, but that didn't help..

seems like another AVcodec issue, are you by any change playing HD H.264 MKV files? If so, then
