MP4A 5.1 audio stream over S/PDIF - plays in STEREO instead

Hello,

I have a Yamaha RX-V363 decoder connected to my PC over S/PDIF, and 5.1 speakers.

Some versions of VLC play DTS and Dolby Digital streams from MKV/MOV files correctly, in 5.1. It sounds amazing.

However, I have a few movies and trailers that have MP4A streams in 5.1. However, when they are played with VLC, the sound that comes to the decoder is only in stereo, not 5.1. The decoder shows "PRO LOGIC" like when any normal stereo file is played.

What could be the reason for this, and is there a way to make VLC decode these streams as PCM and send them to S/PDIF as 5.1 and not stereo?

Thank you!

AAC is not a S/PDIF compatible format.

If I remember correctly the implementation of AAC in 0.8 was never finished. There was channel mapping and level issue for 5.1 audio.

Only working solution is AC3filter if your soundcard doesn't support Dolby Live or DTS connect. AC3filter doesn't work with VLC, so you have to use another player.
