VLC suddenly won't open

I've been using VLC for a while and it's been marvolous. I use it for just about any file that doesn't play in WMP - including DVD/VCDs. Well, last night, my computer was acting up while I was playing one of my VCDs so I restarted the comp. I go to restart the VCD and it comes up with an error screen and tells me it has to close. So I try opening up just the program. Nada. Against my better judgement (I can't do system restore since I can't find out what ate my memory up), I uninstalled and reinstalled. Still came up with an error. I even tried restarting it several times.

I don't know what's going on and I haven't changed anything on my computer in the time inbetween startups. I would really like to be able to continue to use VLC since it's the only program on the comp that seems to play everything (except real player vids, but we can't win them all, no?) with such nice ease. Plus it takes screenshots, which is always a bonus.

Any advice would be nice, and I'm sorry if this is posted anywhere. I wasn't sure where to begin to look since I don't even have a clue why it suddenly stopped working.

I don't know what happend but you could try to uninstall VLC including the preferences.
Perhaps somebody here can tell whether VLC leaves other clutter around (perhaps temporary files which may not have been deleted by accident etc.); this should be deleted too.

There should reset settings option under VLC start menu. You can also manually delete VLC settings.
