VLC crashes when I take a snapshot!!

Postby thedarkjoker » 09 Aug 2008 04:58

VLC media player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This is what it says when I take a snapshot. Then at the bottom it says Send Error Report or Don't Send. I click don't send and the program just crashes, i'm back to my desktop. I don't get it. I just downloaded the program today. I really would like to use the video cap feature in this. VLC is all around a nice program and i'd like to be able to continue using it. If you could help me that would be great! Thanks!!

Hello,
i m sure you should provide vlc version
it would be nice to run vlc -v2 from a command line and provide the output.
Finaly the best is to download a nightly and run within a debbuger like gdb providing a backtrace

Either install 0.8.6h or use the libvlc.dll from it with 0.8.6i.

Awsome, I got the snapshot to work! Thanks man! But uh, one thing. How can I get the picture to look crystal clear like with no grainy look to it? I notice that when I upload the pic to photobucket or I look at it through photoshop. Thanks again!

Is there some added graininess or is the original video grainy?

I don't belive the original vid is grainy, and i'm not sure if there is added grain to it. I never add anything like that. If i watch the movie through my dvd player or PS3 it looks great no grain at all.

The movie was made in 2002 it's we were soldiers. Maybe it is just grainy itself.

You can try Media Player Classic and it's snapshot feature to see if the image is grainy.

I tried the latest version 1.0.3 but taking a screen shot closes the program instantly without even an error message or a crash report.

I then tried previous versions 0.9.9, 1.0.0, but they crash as well.

I had to go back to version 0.8.6i for the snapshot to work again.

Running Windows XP
ATI RADEON HD 4350
3GB RAM

Thanks. I changed it to "OPENGL" first but the colors were off so I used "WINDOWS GUI" instead and everything was fine.

It was crashing for me too, when I try to take a snapshot of a 1080p frame. I tried changing the "Video Display" setting from "Default" to "Direct X" and "Windows GDI". Neither one of them fixed the problem. Finally (in the same dialog) I turned off "Accelerated Video Output (Overlay)", and went back to "Default" on the Video Display setting. Now I can get snapshots. This is with Win XP Pro and a Radeon HD 4850 512MB graphics board.

BTW, the link to the FAQ doesn't go to anything useful. At least I couldn't info on snapshots crashing there.

"Windows GDI" did nothing. Using Arbie's solution to turn off the "Accelerated Video Output (Overlay)" DID work, HOWEVER after I used "Jump to Specific Time" and "Snapshot" it crashed again and continues to do so even with with the "AVO" turned off.

I used to use VLC many years ago just for screen capping purposes, but lost it when I upgraded. Just downloaded again today for this purpose and will have to go elsewhere I guess. :/
