Well good question. It's time for VLC 64 bit.

I'd a 64 bit Mandriva Powerpack with VLC. Here a link to a Night build VLC for debian for 64bit OS:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/#debian. Now is it possible to build one 64bit VLC for Vista 64bit?
But Linux -Mandriva PP64bit- didn't support my newer Atheros wifi chipset (yet) so now i'm back at Vista (windows 6.0) 64bit.(Atheros chipset is working, but not yet with WPA2 support). Oh and did you know that If you've a OEM 32bit Vista (sticker with activation key on pc) on your pc, that you can upgrade for free to a 64 bit Vista? of course if you've a 64bit cpu onboard. Just download a 64bit Vista version (iso) of the same type(like home premium or so) be aware that it isn't activated already(cracked version), burn it on DVD-R and install it and use your 32bit key from the sticker.
Anyway I hope we'll have a VLC 64 bit player soon, for Windows / Linux and other OS.

About media codecs and 64bit: LIBAVC (that's build in VLC if i'm right) is in a windows version in beta for 64bit: FFDshow !
Linux has (of course) already LIBAVC in 64bit version on a 64bit distribution.

Windows FFDshow 64bit beta:

AFAIK it is compiler related issue that prevents x64 builds.

Great. So it's a question of time. Because I read this: The current state: It is already possible to generate applications using these headers, libs and runtime together with gcc4.3 and up :-) There might be bugs here and there but everything is mostly complete.
More content to come... In the meantime please visit the project page for releases and more details!

There is no VLC-w64 because the compiler is not ready.

Sorry to hear that VLC for win x64 isn'tready.

Meanwhile Vista x64 users can use a mediaplayer (no not windows media player!) that uses 4 example FFDshow64.
You know media player classic? They got a x64 version too!
Image
get MPC HC x64 here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=245172(2008/11/29 new version!)
get FFDShow64 here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=569930(click: svn builds by clsid, then click: 64bit builds )

First install FFDshow64 in program files (no not in the program files (x86) ), then configure it(no disabled codecs) select Libavcodec, if their is a 3th option, then select the 3th one. After that reboot your windows thing(get a Linux 64bit distro if you want stability and no reboot and true VLC-64bit and Flash 64bit  ).
After reboot and FFDshow64 installed, install MedisaPlayerClassic Homecinema 64bit (no not in the program files (x86) ).

If VLC 64bit for windows is their, then remove above..(well not FFDshow64., that's incredible handy, the only codec software you need on windows).

Then we got at least a x64 mediaplayer with enough codec support. We can use this till we got VLC x64.

How about Free Pascal as Windows x64 compiler?

VLC is written in C/C++, not Pascal...

Wow. Just wow. I downloaded the codec pack and the media player listed, and comparing VLC in 32 bit versus MPC in 64 is almost silly. Most of the time the CPU is almost idle, and at best it caps at 7%, as opposed to the 23-32~% using VLC. I'm sick of the lack of support for x64, as it is being sold so main stream now, and so very little is done to make use of it. Running anything on a dual core 2.26 isn't much different than running anything on a non-dual core 2.26, and running anything on 2.26 isn't very impressive.

x64 VLC wouldn't able to compete against MPCHC in CPU usage.

Has there been internal progress on this issue?

The mingw-w64 compiler has come great lengths IMHO, and should be ready for VLC.

It even provides a 32-bit to 64-bit cross compiler, so no x64 Windows is needed (for compilation, testing of course is another matter).

The mingw-w64 community is very helpful and surely they would assist as much as they can IF there is trouble.

Current plan is to release something after 1.1.0 is done.

Awesome news! That means there is already a more or less functional build of x264/VLC done by mingw-w64?

You have to ask that from j-b.
