No movie "still" thumbnail/only the vlc cone?

For example when i open my movie folder and i go inside where i have videos stored, the thumbnail for 4 or 5 of the videos are show with the vlc media player icon, which is the orange with white stripes cone, rest are movie stills with the small vlc icon in the bottom corner Is there a way to change this, so that i can see an actual "still" thumbnail of all the video files? this all happened after i moved all my video files to my external HDD,(or maybe after installing Nero 8) The first 40 show "stills" thumbnails and then i installed Nero 8 and now i get the orange and white cone, so i uninstalled nero , reinstalled it but unchecked all video recognition files and the first transfare after that was a "stlls" thumbnail, hurray... -*- but after that its gone to the thumbnail kind of icon (1 piece of blank film with the vlc logo in the corner) but its a black still and i know the opening frames of these films are not black!
I have uninstalled vlc, uninstalled nero, cleaned reg. then installed nero without any video recognition, then installed vlc and back to -*-
Sorry for the long winded expo but its starting to get to me, every movie i put into the folder now (or anywhere) is seen as a black movie still with the vlc logo in the corner.

Please help

Mark

VLC can't do any Windows Explorer previews. And the preview is locked to file type associations. So those cone files have file type that is not associated to Windows Media Player (which does the stills/thumbnails).

I don't get it. I mean, VLC is codec-free. So I do NOT have any codecs installed on my notebook. OK.
But what is freaking my mind out is your answer. You said VLC can't do any windows explorer previews. Is that right? And you also said that WMP is the app that does the thumbnails.

So in other words, if the guy who's doing the thumbnails is WMP, how is that possible if WMP can not play .AVI-based-movies by default(with no codec)?
So I tried to play an AVI file using windows media player and it just pops up a window telling me it can not play the file. In other words, it's not WMP that's behind the previews, it must be VLC Media Player[current 1.1.10].
With that said, if VLC can make the previews of AVI files, why cant it handle FLV/Other video formats?

I've already checked 'show thumbnails instead of icons' box and all video format is associated with VLC, so I'm really out of ideas here.
What am I missing in here?
