Sound crackling

I like to use VLC for watch avi files, but the program has a nasty tendency to make the sound start crackling after awhile. If I pause the video for a few seconds, it normally goes away. Sometimes, I have to pause it for several minutes or even stop the playback entirely to make the sound return to normal. How can I keep this extremely annoying situation from continuing. It's driving me nuts. I don't have this problem with any other software, just VLC.
