audio skipping/dropping out

i'm having some audio problems with the latest stable version of vlc. the sound will intermittently drop out for a fraction of a second. i've tried all the usual suggestions, e.g., increasing the cache value, changing the audio output type, etc. is there anything else i should try?

thanks!

Using 0.8.6f, and I am experiencing the same issues when playing .flac files once in a while. Will try the h build, and report back. Btw, any idea where h's release notes might be?
