teacher - How to start vlc or save "Mono" in preferences?

I'm a 5th grade teacher that needs to save space so I use mono in mp4s. It works great if the studends click the right mouse and choose "Mono" off the Audio device menu but I don't like to send them there because they will play around. So I need a way to have VLC start in Mono mode vs. Stereo mode or be able to place on the target line in a shortcut a mono command. I have tried --mono, --sout-mono-downmix, --sout-mono-channel=0, -mono, etc but nothing seems to help and I get cmd error messages. The manual under Audio shows --mono but it didn't work.

The mp4 plays well, the sound is garble when in stereo mode but as soon as mono is chosen, works great.
Then mp4s are coded in Nero with 32,000 52kbs mono and that works great with VLC on my computer and on the 32 laptops at the same time. On my computer, it is not garbled but it is on the laptops.

Any of you gurus know how to start it in mono mode?
Thanks for helping my classroom

I am not sure if there is any option for that in current stable builds.

Thanks for answering. I wonder why they show --Mono if it can't be used on a shortcut target line. Am I entering it right, or does it need some other word in front of it, like --audio-mono?? thanks for your help
