VLC Media Playback issue

Hello,

This is the 1st time I've posted to this forum, so be patient and I'll try to provide all the info needed to fix this.

The issue is playing AVI files with VLC Media Player. I generally load the player from the Windows taskbar. Once the interface has loaded I then choose, File, Open File. When the dialogue box appears, I select browse to open My Videos folder and navigate to a movie (AVI format). I can generally navigate within the folder, but when choosing an episode (of a series) or a movie the CPU usage for VLC will increase rapidly to 30-50% and more. The 'Open File' window freezes, then the program crashes. Initially, I had 0.8.6f installed, but after having similar problems uninstalled this version and installed 0.8.6e.

The specs for my computer:

O/S: Windows XP SP2
Memory: 1GB RAM
HDD: 250GB (3/4's full)

Other processes working in the background include:

Avira AntiVir
Sunbelt Personal Firewall
IOBit SmartDefrag Beta 5.0.1
Utorrent 1.7.7

I've disabled or closed these programs, but get the same result as described.

BTW, I can occasionally open a file by My Computer, but this is not always the case.

I completed a scan using AntiVir and Spyware Doctor, but nothing significant.

Any suggestions as I like VLC player.

Thanks

sera

Does explorer so same symptoms if you browse to same place and click AVI file once? (what I mean: is it a preview issue?)

Try deleting your preferences and cache files by going to (enter in Windows Explorer address bar):
%APPDATA%

And delete the "vlc" folder.

Arite.

Hello,

This issue doesn't seem to be happening now, isn't that always the way? Anyway, thanks for your replies and info.

BTW, a handy feature would be:

- cuing option when you hit the right-hand mouse button;

Thanks

I tried erasing the cache but the issue still exists.
the video hangs, and then at like 1 minute the video continues
