Upgrade 8.6e to 8.6f now can't open flv files

Postby walterscott » 24 Apr 2008 03:27

Following upgrading from version e to version f, now I can't open flv files. I've been running 8.6e for several weeks on a laptop running windows XP and could routinely open and view flv files. I upgraded to 8.6f and now when I attempt to open the same files, the application opens, but the file does not load and I can not view the video. Do I need to uninstall 8.6f and go back to 8.6e?? Any suggestions??

What happens when you open the FLV file - e.g. does it just start and then stop immediately, or do you see a black screen in the same size as the video?

Arite, Thanks for the reply. Actually, I don't see anything. The application opens and the file name appears briefly just below the volume icon. Then the file name disappears. The video window never opens and I don't see anything below the menus. No black window.

Try deleting your preferences and cache files by going to (enter into Windows Explorer):
%APPDATA%

And delete the "vlc" folder. Then open VLC and try a FLV video.

Arite, Sorry, but I didn't understand your suggestions. I looked for appdata, but couldn't find it. Can you be more specific about it's location?? Thanks.... Scott

Sure - assuming you are using WinXP go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data

And deleter the "vlc" folder. Bear in mind that "Application Data" is a hidden folder so show hidden folders needs to be enabled for Windows Explorer.

After deleting the "vlc" folder open VLC and try a video.

OK, I finally found it and deleted the vlc folder in the application data folder, but I got the same results when I tried to open a flv file.....:-(

There are still issues with playback of FLV files in 0.8.x (e.g. seeking). Try the FLV file in a nightly build of 0.9.0:

Since 8.6e seemed to work, would you recommend going back to e or forward to version 9??? I think I'll try 9 and then report back.

Not sure why 0.8.6e works and 0.8.6f does not. Could you upload a sample possibly?

Still - try a nightly build of 0.9.0-git.

OK, I uninstalled 8.6f and installed 9.0, but I got the same results......the file name appears briefly, then disappears and nothing opens.....but the GUI looks more interesting.....:-)

I think I'll try going back to 8.6e and see if that works......if not.....?????????????????

Could you run "vlc --file-logging -vvv", try opening the .flv file and paste the contents from vlc-log.txt here? (with 0.8.6f)

Sure......tell me where to find vlc --file-logging -vvv and vlc-log.txt and I'll re-install 8.6f and I'll post the requested info.

Just open a windows command shell and do:
cd "\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC"
vlc.exe -vvv --file-logging

It'll create the vlc-log.txt file in the C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\ directory.

I'm sorry, but as a developer, your instructions are probably very clear. Unfortunately, as a user, I have no clue what you want me to do. I'm happy to try, but you'll need to provide a little more direction.

OK - dionoea wants you to paste the contents of the log file generated by VLC when playing the *.flv file.

Open "Command Promt" or go to "Start >> Run..." and enter "cmd" (then press Enter).

In the commandline shell enter:

Code: Select all

cd "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC"
That will take you to the directory/folder where VLC is. Then enter:

Code: Select all

vlc -vvv --file-logging
VLC should come up. Open the FLV file by going to "File >> Open File..." etc. and select the problematic FLV file.

Then after it has failed/finished close down VLC. Go to the folder (in Windows Explorer):
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC

And you should see a file called "vlc-log.txt". Open it up and copy and past the contents here (use the <code> tags).

Cheers, Arite.

I have just upgraded from 8.6e to 8.6f and I have about 20% of my mp3 files won't play in VLC player? I have no trouble playing the same files in Winamp or Windows media player. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Yes, and I get the same result. I have not tried to collect the txt file for you with other flv files, but whenever I tried to open one with either 8.6f or 9.0, I always got the same result. Each time I go back to 8.6e, they all work. Does that answer your question??? Did the txt file help??

I have the same issue in that 0.8.6e works, but not 0.8.6f.

Vista ultimate 64 bits. oddles of RAM and latest (just about everything).

Fresh instal. 0.8.6f does not play file as per second log below.
Remove f, instal E. File plays perfectly (first log).
Remove e, instal f. File does not play (second log).

Logs are similar to ffmpeg debug:

0.8.6e:

ffmpeg debug: detected format: flv
main debug: selecting program id=0
ffmpeg debug: adding es: video codec = VP6F
ffmpeg debug: adding es: audio codec = mp3
ffmpeg debug: AVFormat supported stream
ffmpeg debug: - format = flv (flv format)
ffmpeg debug: - start time = 0
ffmpeg debug: - duration = 100801000

0.8.6f:

ffmpeg debug: detected format: flv
ffmpeg error: Seeking too far : EOF?
ffmpeg error: Seeking too far : EOF?
main debug: selecting program id=0
ffmpeg debug: adding es: video codec = VP6F
ffmpeg debug: adding es: audio codec = mp3
ffmpeg debug: AVFormat supported stream
ffmpeg debug: - format = flv (flv format)
ffmpeg debug: - start time = 0
ffmpeg debug: - duration = -1

Hope this helps.

Re: Upgrade 8.6e to 8.6f now can't open flv files

Postby oldarney » 30 Apr 2008 04:18

some .flv videos that used to play great on vlc now dont and others return unrecognized format. the video that dosen't play is missing a part in the middle. vlc is known for playing everything. if it can play why not play it?
