VLC Fast forward

Hi,

I have just updated to 8.6f and I am having problems with skipping forward on mp4(x.264) files. If I skip forward more than 30-40mins of video it takes a very long time for it to actually skip forward. Once it does catch up I can skip back and forth to furthest most point but not beyond as the same catch up delay occurs.

This happened on 8.6e version aswell

Any idea on how to fix or why this is hapenning

Cheers

Try the latest nightly build of 0.9.0 from:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

It has better support for H.264.

Hey Arite,

That worked..not very smoothly but it worked. Seeking now takes about 2-3 secs instead of <1sec and for abuot 1-2secs after it starts playing it is extreamly grainy but at least I know that in the next version the problem has been addressed.

Cheers

To increase the speed you could try skipping the H.264 loop filter. See j-b's post here (the instructions differ slightly for 0.9.0's Qt4 interface although should be clear enough):
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=42328

Seeking will probably be faster, however the video output quality will be lowered.
