No sound with AVI File

I downloaded some camcorder footage to my laptop in an AVI file. For some reason I cannot hear the sound when I play it with VLC. I have tried to use virtualdub to correct the problem, but with no luck. My wife's computer has the same file dowloaded and that is fine using windows media player. The file contains 16kHz ADPCM mono track. Any advice.
