VLC MP4/M4A Fast Forward Problem

Hi,

I have just downloaded the 8.6e version and tried to play my h.264/acc muxed mp4 file. It plays no problem. The problem occurs when I skip past more the 40minutes or so. If I do this the video and audio pause, the time index keeps moving forward. At first I thought VLC player was hanging but its not. I can access all the menus and if left long enough the audio and video will start playing again. So it is just taking a very long time to skip forward. It will do this for mp4 and m4a files alike but not with any other format. It plays and skips avis no problem. I know there is nothing wrong with the files themselves.

I have spent hours searching forums etc (how I knew the audio and video eventually catch up) and all i have found is really old posts asking the same question with no answer. Can any one shed some light on this problem. I dont want to change players cause VLC I use for everthing and its so easy to use.

Cheers

Ok,

I have found out how to reduce the time it takes to skip forward...but with draw backs!!!

In Preferences, I clicked on "Advanced Options" and the went to Input / Codecs -- Access Modules -- FIle and I increased the "Caching value in ms" option to 8000. (brought it up as far as 20000 but did make it any better then 8000). It takes longer for the file to start playing. When I skip forward now it takes about 6-8secs to start playing again and this is now the same for AVI

Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Cheers

This is a very interesting problem... If you analyze it you will find that it has direct relationship to the time the system has been running.... What I mean is that if the Windows is running for 20 minutes then you can FFWD in the first 20 minutes of the video without any problem. But if you try to Fast Forward after 20 minutes the video will freeze for a long time...

WOW... Im not even going to ask you how you found this out.. I will try it later when I am at home and see if it is the same on my system.. Very strange if it is.

imarshad: You have MP4 or MKV (matroska) files that cause issues?

I was having the same problem and noticed it was only occurring in VLC, quicktime fast forward function worked fine all the way to the end of the movies. I never noticed it until today after I reboot my computer (once a month) and tried to resume a movie from my last scene. Is there a workaround for this? The files/movies in question were .mp4 also and all encoded using the same method, verified to be working in quicktime.

I agree, VLC just doesn't work properly with mp4.

TheLimp, you will have to play back mp4 using a properly coded media player like quicktime, vlc has no answer for this, it is the worlds suckiest mp4 player.

Have you tried the latest nightly build of VLC 0.9.0-git?:

I've had this problem for ages as well - tried the latest nightly build, but it wouldn't play mp4 files at all... XD

Hi,

I dont have the same problem with the direct relation with the time the PC is turned on. It makes no difference on my machine.

I have tried the nightly builds and they worked with MP4 ok and was able to fast forward ok. It is really annoying using the nightly builds becuase they keep crashing when you close it etc but hey it works and its only a matter of time before a stable release comes out...

Will keep with VLC till then.

Actually, I downloaded Media Player Classic and ffdshow, and this works excellently:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=173941

I'll still use VLC for everything else, but I'm going to stick with this combination for the time being.

Has anybody been able to work out a solution for this yet? We are very keen to get this working again as we have a deadline approaching.

Its very frustrating as we only found this issue at the last minute of testing. We are having the same issues that seem to be time stamp related in someway.

We also need to be able to incorporate Active X control, hence we are using 8.6e version. The later versions seemed to have issues with Active X.

Any help would be much appreciated

Chris

I don't think you can fix this with some setting modifications. I think it is code related issue (aka bug).

Hello. I was wondering if there was ever a fix for this problem. I am trying to listen to an .m4a podcast and it will start about halfway through the podcast, play a few seconds, skip forward a few minutes, and repeat. The specific podcast is the Rooster Teeth Podcast (http://s3.roosterteeth.com/podcasts/index.xml).

Version 1.1.11

i have this problem too.
the version of vlc is 2.1.4 (x64) (it also happend in x86 version).

it happened with large files.
files that are sort of 1gb (more or less), works good.
i can manually skip to further time and it continue playing from there.

in big files(more then 2 gb), the problem still exist(for me).

i have windows 7 x64 with 4 gb ram (ddr2).
intel core 2 duo e6600
sapphire hd 2400 pro

thanks a lot :)
