VLC halting

I'm having some problems with VLC halting on me.

When playing a file every 10-30mins my PC will to a strange thing.

The video and sound freeze for about 3-4seconds and then the video continues, not from the point that it froze but later on in the video.

There is some noise from the PC like the HDD is re-initaillising during this freeze period.

I think that my PC puts the HDDs into a power save state. The video runs of the RAM until it needs the information and then re-awaikens the hard disk.

I have 1.75TB of data spanned accross 4 independant HDDs and all have the same issue.

When I run a dvd in vlc there is not problem. When i run wmv files in wmp there is no problem.
I love VLC but this issue is annoying me. Does anyone knoe of a fix? Maybe a way of increasing the buffer, loading the full file into the ram or stopping my hdds from sleeping?

I'm using vista 64-bit.
Current nvidia drivers for an 8800GT.

Are you sure that option is working? If you jiggle the mouse every few minutes, does it still happen?

Some laptops have helper apps that change power options during runtime, so that might be one thing.
