fyi - latest vlc-0.8.6e-win32 wont work on W98SE

Not that anyone uses Win98x anymore, nevertheless important to note:
All previous versions worked just fine! on Win98x, however as of this latest version vlc-0.8.6e-win32 will not work on Win98x anymore so maybe that should be noted somewhere - that functionality on Win98x ceases to exist with this latest version.

Yes, the thing is we can't really do anyhting about it, because the widget library doesn't support W98.
However You can download 0.8.6c zip file and take the libwxwidgets.dll in the plugin directory and put it in the 0.8.6e installation directory

Brilliant idea...
I assume you meant to say replace the libwxwidgets_plugin.dll file - and is what I did.
I already have all the zips anyway, so I took it out of 0.8.6d since it's newer than c...
It's even Compiled by jb even..<g> ..thank you so much for the tip jb - nice work!
Doing it this way, I imagine it allows the full functionality of the newer 0.8.6e updates right?
...but only the esthetic cosmetic of the gui that this file controls remain right?
It seems to work just fine this way, thanks again.

believe me, don't take the 0.8.6d one, but take the 0.8.6c one... If I tell you so, as I am the one compiling it, believe me.

Okay, I believe - I replaced libwxwidgets_plugin.dll with the 0.8.6c only
Thank you

Being one of the last dinosaurs, which use win98se, I would like to know, where ver. 0.8.6. C can be found still?
Has some friendly vlc-friend a hint for me?
Yours, CNGolf²

The win32 version of VLC 0.8.6c can be found here:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... .6c/win32/
If you want to do the libwxwidgets_plugin.dll trick with the latest 0.8.6e, just download the *.zip (or *.7z) version of 0.8.6c and extract the libwxwidgets DLL into the appropriate directory for 0.8.6e.
Cheers, Arite.

Hi wizzards!
Some minutes ago my little son was very unhappy, because he could not use vlc to see a record of "The fantastic 4", and now vlc is working again on version 0.8.6.e under win98SE!
You are very polite here to solve the problems of a newbie in this forum. That is something You won´t see on every forum in the web.
Thanks a lot!
w98? Sorry, I decided to move to SE. It is indeed a progress compared to W98. I don`t want to get angry about w98 again.
So if You have problems with Your CNG-fed car, perhaps You visit me and my buddies at

Bye!

I'm another Win98 dinosaur. I'd be happy to help with testing if you wish.

Hello Mr. J-B, glad to meet you on this forum.
I was always very happy using VLC media player, even on my old Win98SE system. I have another WinXP sys and - my best - a Debian one, which I am eventually migrating to.
The only thing I am unhappy about is when I read from you things similar to "we can't really do anyhting about it", about the problem mentioned before in the posts.
To be exact, the error given sounds like this:
wxWidgets fatal error
This program uses Unicode and requires Windows NT/2000/XP.
Program aborted.
I can't believe there couldn't really be a workaround, since I seem to know that some other software currently use Unicode under Win98SE. Or am I wrong? Isn't out there any patch for Unicode in Win98 that I could have seen before?
VLC was advertised as a Multi-platform player. It's sad when a platform comes out of range, even when it's a quite old and bad one, I think.
Come on, j-b, just for the fun of it, please bring us the solution implemented in the new releases. Could really Unicode be the only matter of the problem?
I am ready to test any file you want me to.
Have a nice day.
Mimmo27
PS: I meant to be friendly as writing, but, if it didn't seem so, then it's due to the fact I'm Italian and don't know English very well.

The demise of Windows 98 has been greatly exaggerated.
In fact, Win 98, SE at least, remains alive and well, as shown by the various active Win 98 groups around the web.
There are people who say Windows 98 gets better every year, especially on days when M$ issues its XP/Vista patches.
Win 98 has proven itself reliable and secure in actual practice -- theoretical considerations to the contrary notwithstanding. It is also faster, with less overhead than later versions. It doesn't have the activation problems of XP/Vista for people who change their configurations and maintain working back up machines. Because I have not wasted my time on M$ XP problems and patches, I have had weeks added to my life.
While actual numbers remain problematic, the number of Win 98 users is higher than many non Windows platforms included in the term multi-platform.
Conclusion: Win 98 is here to stay and remains a platform to support for anything claiming to be multi-platform.

OK ? So ? What is the point of this post?
0.8.6f work on Win98SE and 0.9.0-devel too.

I haven't tried every nightly build, but I have run several on Win98SE with all the updates from Win98SE Autopatcher as built by Soporific at MSFN.
vlc-0.9.0-git-20080321-0003-win32 work very well, until time to quit, when Visual C tells me about an "unexpected program termination".
Since then, nothing but trouble. One modification or other has inserted a call to Shell32 that Win98 cannot cope with, and so the program shows error messages, but never starts for me. Yes, I have Unicows.dll both in system directory and in program directory, and they are the same version (1.1.3790.0)
