Nightly Build Bugs

Hi - I keep getting rejected in the Trac system but wanted to make you aware of a strange behavior in the Nightly Builds ever since build 20080205-0122.

Ever since the Nightly Build of 20080205-0122, the program keeps reporting a dialog box "VLC Media Player" with the following message, "VLC media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close." It also give detailed error code information, which I'm not sure you receive as an error report.

What is strange is that the flv file does start to play, then the error dialog box pops up, but the video will continue to play, covered up by the error box.

I do know that I have tried the Nightly Builds right up to the latest 20080225-0000 and it continues to happen.

I have found that if I go back to the Nightly Build of 20080125-0000, the program works just fine, so I don't think this has anything to do with either the flv files or my Windows XP Pro system - it just looks like some change was made between the 0125 build and the 0205 build that is causing this error.

Is there any data that I can send to you or do you actually get the error report that is generated in the Temp file?

Thanks - if I need to open a bug report, please direct me to the correct page - but since this is an unsupported version, I'm not sure reporting through the Trac system was the correct process.

Thanks for a great product and let me know if I can help provide any further information.

This is typical behavior of the nightly builds, some days they work and some days the don't work. If it is a bug then they usually spot it sooner or later but there's no harm in reporting it and maybe they don't know that there's a bug. Anyway here's some info that I posted on how to get added to the trac:
If you're sure that you've spotted a problem then report it here on the forum, you may also want to make a ticket here: Ticket

Note: you may have to send a PM to either j-b or dionoea informing one of them of your username so that it can be activated.
Hope it helps.

Hi,
VLC nightly builds crash regularly on nearly half of my files, it does that for a month now. I have a detailed crash report and dump for vlc-0.9.0-svn-20080225-0000-win32.7z on
http://www.alvidente.com/private/crash20080227211816.7z , made by inspector (a little utility made by opera-software to track crashes on their betas). I don't know if it can help or not.

Best regards,
Sebas

Sebas,

Just curious - if you go back to the Nightly Build from 20080125-0000 do your files play correctly? That was the last Nightly Build that I found that worked correctly on my system. The next one (20080205), and every one since has has the crash issue.

Be interested to see if you get the same result by using the 20080125 build.

If you click on "more info" or sth like that, it should display which module causes the error. If it is libfreetype_plugin.dll, that problem should be fixed by now.

If I reverse to the build 20080125, no more crashes so far.

CMW :
If it is libfreetype_plugin.dll, that problem should be fixed by now.
- With the last build (20080228-000), it still crashes, and some other time it crashes when exiting VLC.
- I found no way to see which lib is the culprit for the crash.
- The title of the video inside the display window is not wrapped and all jerked (it's ok with 20080125)
- The drag and drop on the VLC-icon doesn't work anymore (it starts VLC, but the movie doesn't play, I have to drag it on the VLC's window)

Best regards,
Sebas

Sebas:

Thanks - that's what I'm seeing, too. Build 20080125 is the last one that does not crash.

CMW:

Yes, the error report does show "libfreetype_plugin.dll" as the offending file. And, as of last night's build, 20080228, it still fails. The last good build was 20080125.

Do you know if the temp file data gets sent to videolan when it crashes or do I have to do that manually?

Thanks
