Audio Codec ADPCM how to add

Yes, regrettably I'm a newbie.. I have been using VLC for about a 6 mos as my main media player and streaming video.. First of all I must say I love it.. It's intuitive and pretty trouble free at least for me.. I recently recieved as a x-mass gift (yes too much information) a FLIP Camcorder.. It saves the video as .AVI when I play it on VLC there's no audio..it does play in MediaPlayer.. the codec used is ADPCM .. is there a way to add this codec to VLC.. I tried most of the setting in set Audio Options.. unless I'm missing something glaring..

tia..

What codec does VLC say it is? Open the *.avi in VLC, press "Crtl+I" and click on the "Advanced information" tab.

Thanks for the reply.. looks like it's:

Stream 1
codec: ms
language:
type: Audio
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
Bits per sample: 4
Bitrate: 177kb/s

Is there a way to adjust for VLC

Well the FourCC "ms" means that is is MS ADPCM, IMA ADPCM, Duck DK4 ADPCM or Duck DK3 ADPCM, which as far as I know are all playable in VLC.

Try resetting you preferences and cache first by going to:
C:\Documents and Settings\(Your username)\Application Data

And delting the "vlc" folder. Then open VLC and try the video.

If there is still no difference then would you be able to upload a sample (use e.g. http://www.mediafire.com/ for file hosting)?

Thanks for the link (very festive :D). VLC is able to playback the audio, just the AVI file has not been written properly/VLC can't read it properly (is an AVI v1.0) and so, for example, the timing is given as 6:58:24 (as supposed to 24 seconds).

In order to fix it I just opened it in VirtualDub and re-saved it as an *.avi file.

To do this, download VirtualDub.

Open VirtualDub, then go to "File >> Open video file..." and select the *.avi file. Then select "Video >> Direct stream copy". Finally go to "File >> Save as AVI..." and save as a new *.avi file.

Then that should be playable in VLC.

Cheers, Arite.

I have the same problem (no audio and duration displayed as much too long) playing back AVI's created by recording TV with my Archos AV500. Running them through VirtualDub does fix the problem, but if 0.9.0 fixes the problem that will save a lot of fiddling. When will it be out?

VLC 0.9.2 should be out in a few days.

In the meantime try a release candidate - latest is currently VLC 0.9.2-rc2:

Thanks, that does indeed solve the problem!

Will 0.9.2 be officially release for Mac OSX at the same time as for Windows?

If everything works out OK, then yes.
