.mvk playback trouble

Hi, can anyone please help. This problem appeared out of nowhere.

All of a sudden I cannot play .mkv files. Whenever I try VLC appear to switch on for an instant after which it disappears completely, playing neither video nor audio. However its still running in the background, blocking for an attempts to run a different file, and I have t press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and close it in processes to continue.

Have you tried resetting VLC's settings?

Yep, tried that. Also tried uninstalling VLC, and downloading and installing the newest version, but the problem persist. But it is only .mkv.. All other media files play effortlessly..
