Permanently Changing Contrast

Is there a way to permanently change the contrast/brightness settings on a video so that other video players will be able to see them?
I've changed the settings with the Extended GUI and the one video that was way too dark comes out beautifully. I've tried doing it with various video editing programs, but none of them seem to get it even close to how nicely VLC does it.
I found a How To article on the VLC Wiki, but it was a little unclear to me and I'm sort of a newbie to VLC.
Any help would be appreciated.

Preferences -> Video -> Filters -> adjust

Hm thanks for the help, but that only changes the way I see the video, right?
I mean, if I uploaded it to youtube, everyone would see it as dark as before...
Is my only option to try and change the contrast/brightness with a video editing program?

Well, vlc could, but vlc is not an editing tool.

I think it's easier with VirtualDub.
