VLC and DVB H.264 HDTV

Postby drsnacek » 25 Oct 2007 16:03

I tried to play the recorded file from DVB-S receiver. There is one HDTV channel compressed using H.264, file is MPEG-2 TS (container). So I have recording.ts file and I cant play it using VLC. Why? There is only very fast movement of play indikator and nothing else...
HDTV channels compressed with MPEG-2 Video and saved in the same type MPEG-2 TS file I can play without problems...

Hi drsnacek,

I've the same problem, I think that the player isn't that good for decoding H264

My PC is ok and powerfull enough because I can play live H264 HD content with the StreamXpert of DtTV from dektec (http://www.dektec.com). Unfortionaly this isn't free ...

If anyone has a solution to play HD H264 with VLC please let me know

Yes, some formats of H.264 do not work 100% in VLC (yet). You could try out the nightly build for the next release, 0.9.0. The nightly builds can be found here, you may find that the video plays back better than with 0.8.6c.

Nope. Nightly builds can't play H.264 HD DVB files. VLC is based on ffmpeg, but unfortunately the developers don't keep up with modern ffmpeg builds. At least not in the last 6 months or so.

This is just stupid and wrong. FFmpeg in NB is less than one month old.

Foolish claims without any logs and any reports are useless...

I think the reason why the VLC isn’t supporting my H264 DVB feeds are the PAFF and MBAFF interlaced video (1080i) … other codex have those implementations. I don’t know when this is available in FFMPEG or when we can use other codex in VLC (like elecard, …). Does anyone knows whether those two things are on a roadmap? Lot of Broadcasters are using those PAFF and MBAFF features ...
