VLC 0.8.6c cannot play 1440x1080x3000kbps MP4 properly

I cannot get 0.8.6c (and previous) to play HD MP4 files. The files in question are described as 1440x1080x3000kbps. Smaller format MP4 files play OK.

The first few seconds plays OK then the video freezes, audio continues. After that the video moves occasionally but the picture is highly distorted with, occasionally, half a second or so of good picture.

I have not found anything yet. Any suggestions? I don't think I have anything else that supports mp4

You could try http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/ . You can find Windows binary here: http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?p ... ts#mplayer

Thanks MetalheadGautham, kind of you to help. I followed the link on your page and installed the new QT. I hadn't realised that QT now supported MP4. QT plays the file fairly well. Not totally smooth playback - I guess that's a system limitation.

I'd still like to get VLC working on these if possible.

The graphics card is NVidia 8600GT 256MB on an ASUS board.

RAM usage in VLC is about 750MB/2.5Gb, CPU usage is 55% when the video is moving (distorted) dropping to 5% when video freezes.

I assume you have dual core CPU. QuickTime has multicore support in their h.264 decoder and AFAIK VLC doesn't (or to be more accurate FFMPEG doesn't). So you have to wait for smoother playback in VLC.
