How to use VLC to view HTTP stream

I opened this thread for my question about how to use VLC to view HTTP stream

I have some new information about Windows .

2 days ago when I try to use VLC to view this:

$ vlc http://sjl-casing1.sjl.youtube.com/get_ ... aXz-dryqLg

it takes 5 seconds.

But today, when I do the same (same url, same machine, same network), it tries to download the whole file before displaying the content while it streams.

Can you please tell me how does VLC determine when to stream http for display and when to download the http file before it starts showing the content?

Your URL won't work for me today. The error message is:

main debug: AStreamSeekStream: can't seek

The network here has been slow and ugly today but speed tests show everything as normal.

Hi,

I am having a simular issue. A friend verified it last night on a different Windows XP machine. Seems when streaming the video either does not appear to start decoding or it starts then stops yet the video continues to download to the system. He has a 3.4Ghz P4 which I believe is decoding faster than it is downloaded.

I asked about the options I could use to get the decoders to keep trying to decode as the stream is downloading but someone may have accedently deleted my message yesterday since I got notice it was changed (deleted) but saw yours here indicating the same issue.
