VLC won't let me seek through 720p video

I have several 720p videos with extension .mkv. I understand that mkv is just a container like .avi, but I know the videos are encoded with x264. Ever since I added a second monitor to my Windows XP machine (I don't know if the second monitor is a coincidence or not), VLC will not work when seeking forward or backward in these files. I can watch the files with no problem, but whenever I move the progress bar somewhere , the video will freeze on the last frame it was on and the audio will stop. The VLC counter will still count up from wherever I seeked to.

This has been known to happen shortly after Microsoft updates and will continue for several hours afterwords. So you can wait or play the file all the way through. The problem thus far seems to clear itself.

I am having this problem. i just got back from a lan party and i snagged quite a bit of good rips. all 720p. for certain untellable reasons i don't do MS updates. my laptop was a bit laggy at playing the video so ill throw up the specs:
1.6 pentium m(this is a ton of cpu but it might not be fast enough)
2gigs of ocz CL2.5 333 mhz
100 gig 5400rpm hd(16megs of cache)
ATI radeon 9700 128 megs
so since it didn't run on here i ran it on a dual core 4400+ x2 i got and the video runs amazing but i can't seek through the files. now that i m home i want to make my other desktop into a dvr type of deal but atm i doubt it can run video to a tv(gonna work on that soon) specs are as follows:
amd athlon 939 3000+ venice core @1.8 (soon to be AMD Opteron 180 Denmark 2.4GHz)
2 Gigs of corsair cl3 400mhz memory
Soundblaster audigy 2 ZS platnum
@ the moment using ati express graphics(workin on snaggin an all in wonder card)
and my main HD is a hitachi 500Gig 16meg of cache
if there is anything i can try for anyone let me know. i really can't wait to get this to work. i am gonna be around here alot now as i am going to be doing alot of work on this lil guy to make it into something. thank you in advance for the help

I had exactly the same problem with similar videos using 0.8.6c.
Swapping to KMPlayer with just the standard codecs and set up solved the problem entirely. I am going gto try to investigate whether it is a codec problem with the Vlan setup.

well the main reason i wanted this setup was cause i got my headphones back and i wanna watch some hi def sceenes. ill give this player a fancy and if it works, ill use it...just till vlc gets that lil thing fixed tho. vlc is still #1 xD
