On a few movies i'm trying to watch with VLC there is some sound but not all the sound. The background is there but not the dialogue. What can I do?

tweak the Audio Output module in the preferences. 5.1 and related.

Could you be a bit more precise. Where exactly do I go in the audio section in preferences?

Assuming Windows sound system is set for the correct number of speakers and type of speakers, no adjustment in VLC is necessary. However you can change the action of VLC through the Audio pull down.

I had the same issue!

Watching Stargate SG-1 with Dolby 5.1.

Some files seem to be damaged(?) so far the problem only affected 4 video files of the 2nd season (ep1-4). Played fine in WMP, until I converted them to MKV files(cut out credits and such with mkvmerge so I can fill these DVDs properly, it can split an episode in a little over 30 seconds, then I check to make sure it cut them properly, then I make mkvmerge put them back together, which takes a little under 30 seconds, it's not the best... but it's fast and flawless, unlike vdubmod). WMP (classic) still played the audio fine(LOL) but no video, after conversion.

The problem was fixed by upgrading to the latest 0.8.6b. So well done, to whomever fixed it (maybe it was me by clearing the old preferences/cache).

I noticed though, and still do, VLC is not reporting the Dolby"ness" of these four files, but they definately are according to WMP.

Usually under the menu: Audio | Audio Channels ; Dolby Surround is selected/checked. This is not true for the files that weren't playing correctly (instead Stereo is selected), and still isn't (in VLC 0.8.6b), but the audio is fine, so it's no big deal to me!
