skip frame or frames in paused video

Can I skip frames forward or backward? I'd like to be able to do this by any size jumps too, but when I jump forward or backwards in paused video, the screen doesn't update. I've tried this with a DVD and an mpeg video, and the result is the same.

Is that how it works? Can I configure it to do so? Is it already a requested feature?

No! VLC is a packet based player and has no means to either go forward or back on a frame by frame basis.

Pause is like a marker that holds position. This can not be changed until you press play again.

OK, fair enough, no skip frames. How about an option in the preferences to update the display as soon as the marker position is modified?

From pause to play to pause the display is updated. So I'm not quite sure I understand the question

Pause - Play - Pause is limited to the speed and accuracy of my pressing the keys or buttons.
I want to have a paused video and then a series of very short (or other length) jumps, seeing the display update with each jump.

I think I understand what you're trying to say, It's kind of like if you were to puase the video and then advance the seek bar to another point but the video image stay then same until you un-puase it.

I don't think VLC can do this without some sort of major rewrite of...something or other. Yes, I know.

What about defining a 3s jump as really a 2.9s jump followed by a 0.1s playback? Is there any way to get VLC to do that?

This is a question that the developers might be able to answer. I also heard that this might have something to do with the cache, what cache? I have no idea, but something like this has been discussed before so maybe...

Why don't you try out the nightly builds and see what's missing, then you can ask for whatever it is in the Feature Requests topic.
