When I apply the default skin of VLC 0.86a, this happens;

I can add and remove stuff to and from the playlist and play it but I can't see it. I can right click into the playlist box and it comes up with drop down thing as if there isn't anything there.

Did you download this skin from the Skins page? What version of VLC are you using?

It's the one that comes with the install

I've also noticed that this problem occurs without any use of skin.

Try updating your video drivers and be sure you are using DirectX in VLC. It also wouldn't hurt to update DirectX runtime.
