video pause when playing high resolution video

Postby kobolds » 11 Mar 2007 18:40

I keep getting weird problem whenever playing video with encode :h264 resolution 1024x576 or higher . the video always pause and then skip from time to time . but if the video encode in divx or xvid , I don't see such issue.

is there a way to be able to play smooth ? I try to decrease to zoom to 50% ,but no used? i don't mind if it used 100% of my cpu or half of my ram.

I using dual cpu pentium3 1GZ with 1.5GB ram . I not running any firewall or anti virus , so my cpu usage is almost free. do I need more powerfull machine to be able to play smooth?

Encoders and decoders are not dual or quad processor friendly. So 50% on these processors will be 100% on a single processor.

If the HD file is h.264 non interlaced video you can try shutting down the post processing in FFmpeg. This will make a marginal machine work, but won't effect a machine that is to slow. The resolution here is the determining factor. Most machines (for example) will play 480p however 720p and 1080p or 1080i may be very questionable.

There are no settings for WMv3 or HD MPEG 2, but HD MPEG 2 should be the easiest because there is video hardware support in most cases of more modern machines.
