Converting questions

Hi.

New to VLC. I was wondering how to convert downloaded videos from youtube to a format (any format, preferably avi or mpg) that can be played in my Creative Zen Vision:M.

Also on a semi-related question, how do I convert any youtube videos into just mp3?

By the way, I assume that when I download any videos from youtube, it is supposed to be saved as .flv files right? Cause when I right click, "download video", and save it, the default link that comes out only saves it as "Get video".

Thanks for your help!

VLC can NOT convert FLV files into anything else at this time.

Try http://www.videohelp.com or the doom9 forums.

You picked the only weakness that I have found in VLC. Use ffmpeg to work with the flv files, and when you make them with ffmepg, use flvtool2 to create the metadata so that progress bars will work. ffmpeg will also convert from flv to the other formats that you mentioned.

I think that is wrong, DJ.

VLC can transcode whatever it reads. So you should be able to transcode from FLV to anything in VLC.

But you cannot transcode INTO flv with VLC.

Thanks for clarifying that, I reread my post and saw that I was not very clear.

VLC is VERY particular about the source and destination formats. In other words any source will not work with any format or container. My experience is that FLV will NOT transcode into any thing else that VLC offers. And of coarse it will not produce an FLV.

Please! If you wish to challenge these statements be my guest, but it will be a very frustrating and enlightening experience for all that do so.

Thank You! I will pick up an updated version tomorrow as the nightly probably won't be updated till then. I'm assuming this was committed to 0.8.6 and 0.9.0

no, trunk (0.9.0) only.

Hmm, I don't think this could go to 0.8.6 because you need new versions of FFMPEG, which we won't update for 0.8.6, because of QA.
