I have installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I also have a GeForce 8800 with driver version 100.59. I've tried 0.8.6 and the beta. I can run some videos, mainly DivX or XviD, but Windows Media and MPEG-4 movies will not run. I get sound but the screen is black. I've clicked on use system memory in the DirectX options and nothing happened, then I tried clicking off YUV -> RGB conversion and I got video for a second then the screen started flashing and I received an error message that said the display driver has stopped working and just recovered. This happens in VLC and WMP 11, but, for some reason, I can run a few of these movies in the Zune Player. Is there anything I can do to make the videos play?

Same problem here updated to 100.59 yesterday and only getting a blackscreen when trying to play Xvid.

same problem here. Windows vista x86 32bit. Got a black screen for every video file (audio is still playing) after updating to latest 'nividia-special-vista-driver-100.59'.

Yep, I've changed the output options in VLC. That either did nothing or caused the screen to flicker with an ominous message that said the display driver stopped working and just recovered.

Yes! I agree Windows Vista is a major problem. Most reviewers are recommending waiting for SP1 due out in the fall of 07.

While 3 of the 6 versions of Vista have been released, the install is based on the compatibility of your hardware as to what modules it installs. So after the install if you update drivers you may be able to install the missing modules but this is dependent on which version of Vista you purchased. All the install disks for all the versions are the same image. It's your unlock code that determines the version you purchased and the availability of the modules for install.

Personally I believe that while this may be good for Microsoft it is very confusing for the end user.

I'm not sure if these problems are related only to VLC. I tried playing an H.264 file in VLC and I got no image. I played it in WMP 11, and it runs but I can't skip ahead. I run it in the Zune Player and it plays like normal. I can use Zune player until VLC is working.

Update: I was able to get H.264 to run in DirectX output mode, but Vista kicks me back to Vista Basic. Could this be what is causing WMP 11 to act so strangely with these video files?

H.264 is not natively supported by Direct Show (WMP 11).

I've got the same problem too. Just audio, no video. Running Vista Home Premium x86 with BFG 7600 GT OC card. Updated Nvidia driver to most recent beta. When I play in WMP-11, the video is choppy. However, I Nero ShowTime seems to be working well for me.

I just registered to give you this answer, and it's funny:
take VLC portable...it's working nder Vista, at least for avi files...dvr-ms are not really recognized from portable.

for those looking at portable vlc, google "portable apps", there are also a frew good utilities there, all starting from CD/USB stick.

I am having a similar problem. I can't get any video to display with VLC under Vista. This includes TV streaming from my HDHomeRun and playback of DVDs from a VIDEO_TS directory. With VLC, the DVD will play, the main menu will display properly, but when you try to play the main movie, the screen kind of goes blank. The audio plays fine, but the video doesn't. There is some ambient light which sort of flashes.

I installed WinDVD to see if it would work. WinDVD is one of the only other programs that lets you play a DVD from a directory. WinDVD works fine - it can play these DVD folders without any problems. However, it causes a bunch of other problems with SageTV, which I also use for its DVR functionality.

I Suppose you all have a nvidia graphic card with 100.x driver...
As long as Nvidia won't provide a good driver, we will get problems. VRM9 is also a problem at this time, and the new windvd won't play perfectly when enabling hardware decoder settings...just seat and wait

Having the same issue with an ATI card--all-white playback.

Initially I had this problem.

For me, this problem was fixed by adjusting the output module. I ended up using the OpenGL module, because unlike the DirectX module it won't force Windows to go into compatibility mode while the player is open. It also seems to do much better with dual monitor support. Its possible by using it you are losing some hardware optimizations though, but I have not researched it. The GDI output also works fine, though if I had to guess I would say it is the least efficient.

FYI, Version 0.8.5 works with my Vist Ultimate. OK until fix is found for latest rel.

I'm having a simialr problem.

On Vista Home premium 64bit. Vlc was working fine. Tried it today and just getting a white screen with audio.

This is for avi, mov, mp4, everything I've tried. The avis work fine in WMP.

Ok just tried Version 0.8.5 and things work again but whenever I run a vid in vlc I get the error:

'The color scheme has been changed to Windows Vista Basic

A running program isn't compatiable with certain visual elements of Windows. Click here for more information'

and the screen flashes for a second.

AVI files in general seem to not work on Vista.
When I try play them in either MP11 or Media Center an error message comes up saying "Windows media player is not working". and it closes it. Is there another program I could use to play my avi files? oh and DIVX is saying the same. Thanks

I had the same issue, but here's a workaround for 0.8.6a:

In Settings->Preferences->Video->Output modules, select something other than default or DirectX(You'll need the Advanced box checked to see the options).

I had successful runs with both OpenGL and Windows GDI. I've tried multiple file types running the GDI output and everything looks just fine. Aero stays put.

hey! i read the sticky about vlc vista.
my problem is that vlc was working under open gl mode just fine until i restarted my comp. Now vlc crashes everytime in this mode. I've had to switch to the directx mode, which disables the aero stuff.

Sticky, what about 0.8.6a without the RGB=> YUV option ?
