how to adjust the volume back to 137

Hi, I have used VLC for a few months.
I am currently using its 0.85 version.
So sad to say that I am not too familiar with its functions and those many settings.
One problem is that the volume of VLC, by default is set to 137, but I just don't want that value. 137 is somehow too high for me, but when I tried to adjust this value to, say 108, it seems that there is no such the value in VLC.
Instead it just gives me 97 as its maximum value.

Could anyone please tell me how to set the volume to 108 or other value higher than 100 but lower than 137?
I would like to set it as the 108 level.

And one more problem is that I have no idea how to set the speaker value.
I have a creative SB adudigy 4 with a 5.1 stereo, so I put 5.1 in the channel input textbox, still I can't notice anything changed.

Please kindly help if you could!

Adjust the "Default audio volume" (default is 256) then press Save and close the player.

The default is 100% in other players and VLC allows 6db of gain to the top of the slider but this may cause distortion in some audio cards. 6db=2x volume.

I just adjusted the slider to the middle position, which was around 600, and then saved it.
Now the default volume becomes 111.

Thanks for your help, DJ!
