Black screen when playing mov file

Postby ppan » 05 Jan 2007 09:16

.
Example: http://kanjialive.lib.uchicago.edu/ka/aida_00.mov

In XP (latest patches), Quicktime plays the file well. It plays well with Media Player Classic too. But in VLC, I get a black screen, while the cursor moves to the right during the clip length. The behaviour is the same if I play the file locally from my hard drive, so it is not a connection issue. File info from VLC is:

Code: Select all

Stream 0 Codec: smc Type: Video Resolution: 248x248 Frame Rate: 15.00 Stream 1 Codec: subt Type: Subtitle General Duration: 0:00:20

I tried 0.8.6a, 0.8.4a, 0.8.2, 0.8.0, and get the same behaviour. I even tried the nightly build from 5 January 2007, but I am not sure how to use because the interface does not look like the usual one. Drag & dropping the file to the build gives me error messages like "cannot find directory...", so I could not really test the latest build.

I saw a post pointing to https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/changeset/18477 How can I test this? Sorry, I don't have the intention to compile anything, I can test only executables / compiled builds.

Is there any setting I need to change to get this file playing correctly?
Any chance this will be corrected in a soon-to-come official release?

MOV is a container and as you have discovered it depends on the format in the container. This file type is not supported yet. As for the drag and drop this should be resolved soon.

Any hint about a date when this will be implemented? Otherwise, I will have to find an alternative solution to VLC. I am trying to play a mov file from a VBA control.

I also get the black screen with this file: http://gahoh.marinebat.com/movie/kanji/ ... uu4D25.mov

File info:

Code: Select all

Stream 0 Codec: rle Type: Video Resolution: 162x120 Frame Rate: 10.00 General Duration: 0:00:20
Of course, it plays well in QuickTime and also in Media Player Classic. However, it does not play in Windows Media PLayer (fails to load codec for rle).

I am sorry, but I thought that VLC's strong point was to be hassle-free, "no codec to install". But it seems that the support of files is limited, at least it does not work with 2 basic mov files submitted in this post. Please give me a time frame for correcting this, otherwise I will have to look for another application.

Seems strange that rle doesn't open on Windows Media Player, because RLE is developed by Microsoft. FFMpeg supports RLE, so it should work on VLC some day.

SMC should also be decodable on FFMpeg so VLC should support it soon.

I agree. I tried the following, but still failed to play the mov (rle) file in windows media player:

- un-installed windows media player 11.
- tried to play the file in windows media player 10. Failed.
- re-installed windows media player 11. Tried to play the file. Still failed when it tries do download the rle codec.
- installed the ACE Media COdec pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ACE ... S_Pack.htm (it says that it includes rle codec). Still fails when opening the file with windows media player.

Probably windows media player fails because I am behind a corporate firewall which does not allow to get codecs. I wonder why it has to go and download a codec, since rle codec is supposed to be included in windows media player in the first place. Can't I just run the codec locally?

Anyway, I still can't play the file in windows media player. Could you tell me when VLC will support this file type?

Well, just installed VLC 0.8.6b and I still can't play the file:

I get a black screen. What do you mean by "soon"?

The drag and drop has been resolved in VLC 0.8.6b Test 1. This will be a maintenance release when the tests have been completed. There are no new features or formats at this time.

Any info as to whwn we might expect this codec to be supported?

Thanks.

Hey, it seems like some codecs of MOV file is not supported. Thus, a black screen appears while playing MOV videos on VC player. You can install those codecs to make video playable. Some cases are there where this solution might not work then repair tool comes handy and fix the black screen issues in MOV video files. http://remorecover.com/windows/mov-file ... ktime.html
